Helping students reach the public schools
The 10 Commandments on a folder?

Well, yes. Yes the 10 Commandments are on a folder and I'll tell you why I did it. I was discussing (of all things) separation of church and state in public schools with someone. His opinion was that students can still express their opinions freely and that should be enough. I said that puts a huge burden on the students. Afterward, I started praying and thinking about the situation and came up with this: if the students must lead, they will need help. seperation of church and state Since students can still express their opinions, we can give them stuff that would help get the conversations about Jesus started. And what better place to start then the 10 Commandments? After all, if a student reads the 10 Commandments, he or she may consider them and possibly even obey them and that's a good thing.

What version of the 10 Commandments did you use?

Which 10 Commandments? I read Exodus 20:1-17 in the New International Version, the Contemporary English Version (CEV) and the New King James and a few others. My 10 Commandments ended up being most like the CEV than any of the others, but not word for word from any of them. It had to be short enough to fit on the front of a folder, but easy to understand and just as true. Here are the words I used:

Because I am the Lord your God and you are my people. . .
  1. You will worship Me and Me only.
  2. You will not make anything to worship.
  3. You will not misuse My name.
  4. You will rest on the 7th day because in 6 days, I made the sky, oceans, and everything in them and rested on the 7th day.
  5. You will respect your father and mother and live a long life because of it.
  6. You will not murder.
  7. You will be faithful in marriage.
  8. You will not take what is not yours.
  9. You will not tell lies.
  10. You will not want what belongs to someone else: not their home, their spouse, or anything else.
